Hygiene & Illness
Wrestling is a very physical contact sport - they will sweat a lot, and on each other. Ringworm and skin rashes, while common, will spread quickly and can ruin a wrestler's season. If you suspect any skin conditions, have it looked at immediately so proper treatment can resolve it asap. Any existing skin conditions will eliminate a wrestler from the practice room until the condition has cleared and wrestler has been released by doctor. Tournament weigh-in process involves skin checks by the refs, and if found, is cause for a scratch from the tournament with no refund.
Please implement the following best practices to keep the possibility of skin ailments to a minimum:
-
shower immediately after practice/tournaments (and daily), and use an antibacterial soap such as Dial. Do not let them go to bed without a shower, no matter how tired they may be.
-
keep fingernails trimmed, no white showing
-
always wear clean clothes to practice, and do not wear them again until they've been properly washed
-
NEVER wear wrestling shoes outside, this helps avoid tracking debris/bacteria onto the mats. Wipe down bottom of wrestling shoe after tournaments (think bathroom).

Illness Policy
Do NOT come to practice sick! No one understands the value of dedication like a wrestler, but with such close quarters, illness spreads quickly. Please help us keep the group healthy and abide by standard illness guidelines outlined by the school.
What is Classification and Division, what does it mean?
According to OKWA Rules and Regulations Section 4.3, Classification is designed to regulate competition among wrestlers with similar abilities. This, in combination with age and weight Divisions, determines the wrestler's tournament participation.
NOVICE CLASS is temporary and only recognized as a starting point.
-
1st or 2nd year wrestler
-
All 1st/2nd year wrestlers are eligible to participate in Novice Championships

OPEN CLASS is the ultimate goal of progress
-
Any wrestler listed on a club roster for 2 or more years (regardless of tournament participation)
-
Any wrestler who places 1st or 2nd in the OKWA Novice Championships

GIRLS CLASS is limited to girls

Things to note:
A lot of regular season tournaments (including GTC’s) do not offer a NOVICE 6U entry, as most at this age are beginners anyway. In this case, they simply wrestle as ‘OPEN 6U’.
Boys are not allowed entry to GIRLS classification. However, Girls are allowed entry to NOVICE/OPEN classification, but typically tournaments (including GTC's) require the Girls to enter GIRLS classification along with the NOVICE/OPEN choice, to ensure all Girls quality mat time.
